I like to shock kids early. And so I told them, we're going to read these poems about circus animals and they're like, yay, circus animals. But it's really a story of them escaping their prison, which is the circus. And so it's kind of deep, [and] talks a lot about how to overcome trauma and things like that. There is a lot of learning we've done this year, which has been really fun so far.

And you just started?

Yes, we did that on the second day.

I'm Caleb Pruitt. I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade English at James Garfield School 31.

How long you've been teaching?

This is my seventh year teaching. I took two years off in the middle to manage a finance company, to get some real world experience and missed being around students and kids enough to really come back.

And, and this feels like home to being here.
